Hiring Process
1) Apply
When the Franklin Fire Department (FFD) is hiring, applicants must complete and submit an online application and provide all required documentation to the City of Franklin Human Resources Department by the established application deadline.
2) Written Exam
After submitting an application, applicants must register for and successfully complete the Written Exam. The City of Franklin utilizes the National Testing Network (NTN) for applicant testing. This standardized testing service is used by fire departments nationwide. The NTN cognitive/behavioral examination assesses areas such as reading comprehension, mathematics, mechanical reasoning, and human relations. Learn more about the Written Exam here.
3)Fireground Physical Ability Test (FPAT)
Applicants who have completed an application and achieved a passing Written Examination score may be invited to participate in Test Day, which consists of two phases. The first phase is the Fireground Physical Ability Test (FPAT). Firefighting requires strength, endurance, and physical readiness. The FPAT evaluates your ability to perform essential fireground tasks. Learn more about the FPAT here.
4) Panel Interview - Candidates must successfully pass the FPAT to advance to the panel interview, which is typically scheduled on the same day. The interview further assesses each candidate’s qualifications, decision-making, and readiness for the role.
Applicants who successfully complete all phases of the testing process are placed on a Certification List, which evaluates education, experience, certifications, and Panel Interview performance. The Certification List is valid for six months. As vacancies occur during this period, candidates may receive conditional offers of employment.
6)Background Check & Pre-employment Physical
Conditional offers of employment are contingent upon successful completion of a polygraph examination, NFPA 1582 pre-employment physical, and comprehensive background check. Upon successful completion of all pre-employment requirements, start dates are confirmed and candidates are officially hired. All new hires serve a standard probationary period in accordance with departmental policy.
